Based in Mumbai’s northern suburb; Nalasopara, this project aims to urbanise and give structure to an informal and socially problematic neighbourhood.
The projects takes the form of urban clusters, creating a more open, porous and flexible urban situation. It address issues on multiple scales; the dwelling units allow for appropriation and adaptation, whilst the cluster forms to make communal space for social and economic uses providing a sense of identity for the neighbourhood.
It shows potential ways to balance the informal and precarious lifestyles of this neighbourhood with the neo-liberal, market housings typologies that are currently encroaching and re-developing the area. Creating a scheme which is both affordable and appropriate for the users and profitable for the developers, allowing the project to be used throughout the northern peripheries of Mumbai, creating a dense urban edge to the city.
